When bespoke earns its cost
Most kitchens are fitted well from a range, and a good fitted kitchen in a regular room is not a compromise. Bespoke earns its cost where the room is not regular: a finca kitchen with a vaulted ceiling and no two walls parallel, a Palma apartment with a run of units that has to step around a column, a villa where the kitchen and the terrace kitchen have to read as one piece of joinery through a glass wall.
It earns it again at the top of the market, where the finish is the point. Fronts in a timber chosen from the board, a stone top with the veining matched across the island and the splashback, handles that are part of the door rather than fixed to it, and internal storage designed around what the owner actually keeps.
And it earns it wherever the kitchen is the centre of the house. A kitchen that the whole property is arranged around can be made to that house or fitted to it, and the two are not the same thing.

What is the difference between a bespoke and a fitted kitchen?
A fitted kitchen is assembled from a manufacturer’s range of sizes and fronts and fitted to the room; the gaps are filled and the corners are worked around. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room: every cabinet sized to its wall, the corner designed rather than avoided, materials chosen from the board rather than the range.
Is bespoke always more expensive?
Usually, and not always by as much as people expect at the top of the fitted market. Where it is more expensive, the money is in the joinery, the materials and the design time. Where it is not, it is because an awkward room was going to cost a fitted kitchen a great deal of filler and compromise.
How long does a bespoke kitchen take?
Longer than a fitted one, because it is made rather than assembled, and because on Mallorca it usually reaches the property by sea. The design stage is weeks; the making is often months. The fitting itself is shorter than a fitted kitchen’s, because every piece already fits.
Can a bespoke kitchen be made on the island?
Some are, and some of the companies on the list have their own workshops here. Others are made on the mainland or in Germany and fitted here. Ask where it is made and who fits it, because the answer changes the lead time and who comes back for the adjustments.
Does a bespoke kitchen need a designer?
It has one, as part of the job: the maker designs what it makes. A separate designer or architect earns their place when the kitchen is part of a larger reworking of the house, and the two work together.
