What defines a modern kitchen
Reduction. Doors without frames and usually without handles, runs that go from wall to wall without a break, tall units that hide the fridge and the ovens behind the same front as everything else, and an island that is a single block rather than a piece of furniture. The eye is meant to read surfaces, not cabinets.
Materials do the talking. A modern kitchen is often two or three: a front finish, a worktop, and a floor, chosen to sit together. Matt lacquer or a fine laminate on the fronts; porcelain, quartz or a honed stone on the top, often continued up the wall as a full-height splashback; a large-format tile or microcement on the floor. Colour is restrained and light is engineered rather than added.
And the detail is in what is not there. No cornice, no plinth that reads as a plinth, no visible hinges, no upstand where the top meets the wall. A modern kitchen that is fitted well looks simple. It is the least simple kitchen to fit.

A modern kitchen belongs to a modern villa: a glass wall to the terrace, a long open-plan room, high ceilings and a floor that runs outside. It suits a renovated Palma apartment where the walls have come down and the kitchen has become the middle of the flat. It suits a new build, where the room can be made to the kitchen rather than the other way round.
It is harder in a finca. Vaults and stone walls fight a style that wants straight lines and flat planes, and the kitchens that succeed there are the ones that accept the building: a modern island in a stone room, with the old walls left alone. Is a modern kitchen more expensive than a traditional one?
Not as a style. The price is set by the cabinetry level, the worktop and the island, and a modern kitchen from a good fitted range costs what any good fitted kitchen costs. Where it becomes expensive is in the details that make it look simple: handleless mechanisms, full-height slab splashbacks, hidden extraction.
Handleless or handles?
Handleless gives the unbroken line the style is about, through a recessed grip or a push-to-open mechanism. Recessed grips are the more robust of the two in a house with guests. A slim handle on a flat front is a legitimate third answer and easier to live with than the purists admit.
Does a modern kitchen work in an old apartment?
